The Truth About Your Core: It’s Not Just Your Abs

You know what most people think of when they hear core training?

Sit-ups. Crunches. A bunch of ab circuits that make your stomach burn.

But here’s the truth: your core isn’t just your six-pack — and training it like that is holding you back from building real, usable strength.

Your core is an entire stabilizing system made up of muscles like:

  • The transverse abdominis (deep core brace)

  • The obliques (rotational and anti-rotational power)

  • The multifidus (spinal stability)

  • Even your diaphragm and pelvic floor play a role

When these muscles work together, they act like an internal weight belt — keeping you strong, balanced, and stable from head to toe.

If they’re undertrained? You’ll feel it everywhere:

  • You leak energy during lifts

  • Your posture breaks down

  • You lose power in your stride or push

Here’s the kicker — you don’t need to go wild with endless core workouts.

What you do need is smarter training.

Slow, controlled, anti-movement exercises that challenge your ability to resist force.

One exercise to start today: The Dead Bug

This deceptively simple move trains the deep core muscles to brace, stabilize, and resist excessive movement — the exact job your core is supposed to do.

How to do it:

  1. Lie on your back with your arms straight up, knees bent at 90° above hips

  2. Flatten your lower back against the floor and brace your core like you’re about to get punched

  3. Slowly extend your opposite arm and leg down toward the floor

  4. Keep your back flat and don’t let your torso shift

  5. Return to start and switch sides — 8–10 reps each side

You’ll feel it more than any crunch, and your posture and strength will thank you.

Have a great rest of your day
